Treatment must consist of both medical and psychological health services as needed. Follow-up care may include neighborhood- or family-based recovery assistance systems. Medications and devices can be used to handle withdrawal symptoms, avoid relapse, and treat co-occurring conditions. Medications and devices can assist suppress withdrawal signs during detoxification. Cleansing is not in itself "treatment," however only the first step at the same time.
One study of treatment centers found that medications were used in almost 80 percent of cleansings (SAMHSA, 2014). In November 2017, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new indication to an electronic stimulation gadget, NSS-2 Bridge, for usage in helping in reducing opioid withdrawal symptoms. This device is positioned behind the ear and sends electrical pulses to promote specific brain nerves.
